Imelda took too long. Sorry, Imelda.
Which computer do you use, and...which is better?

Macs are much better for artists. PCs are bulky, hard to work with, and have a bad habbit of doing whatever they can to drive you insane.
Besides, the mac guy on the commerical is friggin' gorgeous.
Calamire
07-04-2007, 12:44 AM
I like Macs too! Mine's really easy to use, and it's never frozen on me or given any troubles. Plus it comes with all this free software.
PCs are much more likely to catch a virus, since most viruses can't even be executed by Macs.

I have a PC. But I would really love to have an Mac. Besides, Macs have more features that regular-old-boring PC's.

Someone should reaallly step in and support PCs. Otherwise, we'll all be stuck sitting around talking about our undying love for MACs.

Macs don't get viruses because no one can be bothered to make one. :p
And I choose PCs because Macs are the MOST FRUSTRATING THINGS EVER. They won't do anything you ask them to. All the stupid menus CHANGE whenever they feel like it. Things just vanish *poof* and can never be found again. And mostly they have no right click, which is like ... insane.

I'm not complaining. :D
Were you shown how to use a mac? I've never had that problem with menus.

Macs make me cry because they hate my so much and I can't do anything with them. MAC, however, makes me cry because I'm so in love. Mac and cheese on the other hand makes my cry because I don't have any and I'm hungry.

^so basically you cry all the time.
anyway... I use a mac, and I think its rather delightful. Only I'm having trouble with the fact that there's no right clicking.
Imelda
07-04-2007, 01:11 AM
No right clicking is just insane.
But what I mean about the menus is that they change and move around according to what program you're in. And there can be programs open that you don't even know about. It just, like, keeps them hovering there randomly and they'll pop up! And because everything changes it's takes bloody ages to find where anything it. Microsoft has many faults, I'm not denying that (I frequently threaten my laptop with a trip through the window) but at least it's consistent about it. You know there's going to be a file menu with sensible options in it. They just have more logic. And a right click.

Personally they seem about the same to me, although it annoys me that Macs don't have a right mouse button. I use a Microsoft and am more used to that, though, so I'd say I prefer Microsoft. Plus Microsoft makes Xbox.
Also, shouldn't this be a poll?

I love my Mac G5, and yes I have right clicking. All you have to do is just buy another mouse. Not that hard. Far superior to that PC junk. :)

I'm about to crush a lot of hopes and dreams, for that I must apologize.
Macs are not user friendly. They don't, as a rule, play the games that are popular (and I'm referring to the OS, not these new Intel bastardizations). I have said this before, but anything and everything you can do on a Mac can be done just as well on a PC. PC's are only bulky if you buy a crappy PC. They make plenty of compact PC's with incredible power and usability. Don't shop at the crappy shops for a PC...
As for virus', let's look at the number of users who use Mac compared to number of users who use PC. PC is close to 1 billion users--single users, not companies using multiple PC's. Mac has roughly 15 million--single users again. Why would anyone want to waste the time affecting one one fiftieth of the market (excluding Linux and Unix, etc.)? Why? You can hit a hell of a lot more for PC. That's why there is no virus market for Macs. But, thanks to your new Intel chip your macs will now be susceptible to easier hacks, which gives hackers a better reason to spend time there, since they have provided the familiar ground for hackers. Congrats.
As for the mac commercials. Those are BS. End of story. Windows is compatible with all the things a Mac is. You can use your stupid little iPods on it, you can use iTunes, you can plug and play just about any camera, flash drive, usb, etc. with a PC. All the commercials tell grandiose lies about PC, but make an effort to ignore the obvious flaws of Macs.
What happens when your Mac actually does crash? Well in a PC, you can reboot and all is well. If something worse happened, you can actually fix it yourself without being a computer nerd. It's also really easy to reinstall everything if need be. Windows is like that--user friendly as a rule. Macs have the opposite problem. If you have a 'fatal error', well tough cookies. You can't just fix major problems on your own, you have to go to a Mac technician to have it fixed. If something bad happens to your Mac, tough shit. Sure, Macs are more 'stable', but that's a very vague term considering the reason Windows have crash problems is because people run loads of useless programs in the background on purpose. Then they wonder why they get spyware and other such crap. Anyone could crash a PC and anyone could crash a Mac. It wouldn't be too hard for either.
I don't care if people buy Macs, I just get tired of people saying "it's better than PC", because, obviously, it isn't. If it were better it would be winning the OS race, and it has been losing for years. You can actually thank Microsoft for Apple surviving, because Bill Gates is responsible for keeping that company afloat. The iPod is the only thing truly keeping Apple on its feet. I agree that Macs tend to be better for multimedia/art type stuff, and that is because they are generally designed in that direction from the start. If you want a PC for that, you need to build one specific to that type of work. A regular 300 dollar PC tower likely won't let you make computer animated movies without freezing a few times.
Macs are also way overpriced, they are not user-friendly (as Callamire said to somebody--did someone show you how to use it?). User friendly means that a person can figure it out easily on their own. It gives simplistic directions. Mac is not easy for people. It's easy for those that know how to use it. Windows is. For the average user it is user friendly.
Now, own a Mac, fine, that's great, just don't say "oh it's the best in the world". Apple has already had troubles fighting off bankruptcy, and that has nothing to do with the whole "Bill Gates stole windows bit". It's because Apple cannot produce a product truly competitive enough for Microsoft. Microsoft owns the market and will continue to own the market so long as the gaming market sticks around. The gaming market isn't going anywhere. They used to make games for Mac, that's where it all started, but as soon as they learned about DOS and Windows and how easy it was to program games for those systems they skipped town. Windows just offers better flexibility for programmers *shrugs*.
So, that's my rant for the day.

Seriously, what is the major differences (program-wise)?
Both PC's and mac's seem the same to me and dont they both do the same type of things???? MS word, internet, paint, files etc. Or are there certain things that a mac can't do compared to a PC and visa versa?
Can some one please explain the major differences? Becuase to me they are both the same!
The Old Fart
07-04-2007, 04:38 PM
In reality there isn't anything that a Mac does that a PC can't. However, PC's are gamer friendly, whereas Macs are not. There are some things that PC's can do and Macs probably never will do unless there is a significant jump in users, which isn't likely.
Macs tend to be more ready for multimedia though. You have to design PC's to be good for that sort of stuff, but standard every day PC's generally are only good to some extent.

Macs can't play a LOT of the more popular games. And that completely sucks in my opinion. The main reason I didn't save up to get Vista was because none of the games I saved up for for ages would work. And that's just taking the- I'll stop now. But why bother? Macs can do less than PCs, and there's less stuff for them!
The Old Fart
07-04-2007, 04:42 PM
Vista is crap. In fact, I can't believe anyone who dealt with the issues with XP when it first came out would actually switch to Vista upon release. Everyone should realize that when Microsoft releases and OS it is going to have major flaws that need to be worked out. I won't get Vista until there has been a major service pack for it. It's too unstable right now.
What Microsoft should do is release an OS that allows you to use all the previous OS's as platforms for older games...but that's my opinion.
Imelda
07-04-2007, 04:56 PM
Vista is uber-rubbish and needs to be tested a lot more before it's released to the public.
And THANK YOU!!!!! Finally, someone can coherently defend PCs. :D
The Old Fart
07-04-2007, 04:59 PM
I think most PC users don't defend it because they don't like wasting the time, hehe. But, I had to defend them because, let's face it, PC's rule. Macs are okay. Mac is sort of like that jerk cousin who thinks he's better than everyone else but nobody invites to the family reunion...

It's a non-issue. The sales show it, the number of compatible programs show it. And most importantly, I show it by voicing my support.

The mac.. is.. without a doubt.
Crap in a shiny box. Yes it can do pretty pictures and YES it may not have any virus' But, the reason for the no virus policy is that people think Mac users suffer enough.
But hey, we all wan't to be artsy and hip so lets all run towards the great glowing thing.. oh wait whats that looming overhead. Its the Mac users old friend.. System lock up.

The Old Fart

The interesting thing now is that PC's have become so cheap that most anyone can afford one. Macs will never be like that for a reason: there isn't enough market and without the market the prices cannot go down like they do in PC's. You can get a decent enough PC for about 300 bucks with a monitor. A super PC can be about 1,000 whereas a super Mac might be closer to 2,000. So, for the average every day user of computers, the PC will continue to win. People really don't care if the computer crashes a couple times a month. The price tag is enough for them to deal with it--but if they understood the computer they would know how to avoid stupid computer crashes. My PC has crashed zero times since I corrected my hardware problems (I had a bad HD when I first bought the PC refurbished). But since then, no crashes, no freezes, no irreparable program errors, etc. I don't have to worry about virus scans because they are done automatically. Virus updates are the same. Basically I only have to worry about the things that are important to me on it :P.

I'm not expert and I have no clue what crazy British programs you have running, but the first thing to do is clear your computer of all virus' and spam, get an antivirus program that isn't flashy and annoying with popup windows and shut down anything and everything that automatically starts up upon start up that you don't need doing that.

You can too right click with a mac, even with a one button mouse and no special programming. Just hit ctrl. I use it all the time because we use those in school and InDesign has a lot of right clicky things.
And I like my mac. With my other laptop, which was an hp running windows, it's fan stopped working and it literally fried the hard drive.
And I wish I was computer literate enough to use Linux. Maybe someday I'll get Ubantu. I don't have an extra computer to run it on though. I love the idea of free programs and a democratic way to make changes without being worried about breaking the law. I do use NeoOffice (the mac version of OpenOffice) so I don't have to pay 150 bucks for Microsoft Office. And some day I'll figure out how to download the GIMP.

And just so you know, there's a huge difference between a "right click" button on your mouse and the ctrl button on the keyboard. The specific issue was with there being no 'right click' on the mouse, not that you can access similar functions by clicking something on the keyboard. And yes, there are mouses that are made for macs that have the right click, but as a standard they don't come with your mac.
